Project Based Master Thesis (Risk Communication and Issu Management) 2019:
Conducting a functional crisis communication exercise with the description of a complete Storyboard/scenario enclosed
Taking part in a crisis communication exercise gives strategic leaders the opportunity to test their decision-making abilities under emergencies and crises. Organisations exercise in order to strengthen their crisis management capability, to identify possible improvements to plans, and to develop necessary skills. But leaders and organisations rarely exercise with a focus on crisis communication.
Exercises specifically focusing on crisis communication function can provide arenas and opportunities for learning and knowledge sharing, and thus enhancing, the organisation's communications skills.
Exercise is important for developing decision-making and strategic planning processes within organisations or units. I would argue that it is possible to improve the planning and conduct of the crisis communication exercises, leading to more relevant and useful results, with greater benefit for the participants and to the organisation as a whole. The key is the contributions from proficient and engaged communicators from the organisation`s own communication team. The target audience for the paper is anyone involved in crisis management exercises, from strategic planners and decision-makers to practitioners.
This paper gives practical recommendations for successful crisis communication exercises and learning points are extracted and analysed and suggestion to improvement is presented.
Since experiences from exercise planning and exercise is rarely published publicly, this empirical contribution adds value to existing literature within the field".
