Research

The main themes of my project are glacial archaeology and climate change. Through a combination of fieldwork and GIS analysis, modelling, and landscape reconstruction, I will examine and evaluate the knowledge-potential of “extinct ice patches” as archaeological contexts.

The term extinct ice patch refers to an ice patch that has, in modern times, melted completely away, at least once – resulting in the loss of the ancient ice core present in many of the archaeologically productive ice patch sites. The effects of this loss of ancient ice, and subsequent yearly freeze-thaw cycles on artefact preservation has not been determined.

Based on fieldwork and modelling I will propose sustainable management strategies for ice patches as archaeological contexts threatened by anthropogenic climate change. If current trends continue, it is likely that the designation “extinct” will soon be applicable to most of these unique and important archaeological sites.
