Banafsheh Ranji
About
Banafsheh Ranji is a postdoctoral research fellow in sociology. She studies the socialization of refugees in Norway. The project focuses on how refugees' everyday life practices are influenced by the messages they receive about refugees from institutions (for example, educational), the media, politicians, and the public(s), and how these messages impact their self-image, self-expectations, and life choices.
In addition to her interest in the field of everyday life experiences of minority communities (e.g., immigrants and refugees), she has extensively worked on the sociology of media, and sociology of journalism, with a particular focus on politically restrictive contexts. She is the author of the book Journalistic Practices in Restrictive Contexts: A Sociological Approach to the Case of Iran (Routledge, 2022).
She is also working on the project "Media representations of immigrants and their impact on integration", where she studies the coverage of immigrants by Norwegian media during the Covid pandemic, and how the coverage has influenced immigrants' everyday life experiences.
