About

Dr. Anniken T. Karlsen researches and lectures in Computer & Information Sciences (CIS) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Education
Dr. Karlsen earned her PhD in Information Science from the University of Bergen (UiB) and holds a Master’s degree in Information Technology from Aalborg University (AAU) in Denmark. She is also a Siviløkonom from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) and a Computer Engineer from the former Møre and Romsdal University College of Engineering (MRIH). She has completed NTNU's UniPed program for employees and a one-year practical-pedagogical education at NHH and UiB.

Teaching and Research Passions
Dr. Karlsen's research and teaching interests in the field of Computer & Information Sciences (CIS) span a wide range of topics, from fundamental theory to practical technology applications. Her work is centrally focused on the design and development of advanced systems through the integration of concepts from diverse domains. Her interests include modern software engineering, socio-technical systems thinking, systems engineering, artificial intelligence, computer simulation and complexity.

Furthermore, Dr. Karlsen's interests extend to the exploration of emerging technologies, such as digital twins, virtual reality, and service robots, serving as pivotal building blocks for the creation of innovative solutions and the optimization of processes. Moreover, she has a strong interest in the field of digital economics, with a particular emphasis on leveraging digital transformation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within a digital transformation context, the area of interest includes enterprise modeling, change management, and project management for handling transformations driven or supported by digital technologies and software innovations.

Academic Roles
Dr. Karlsen has extensive teaching and supervision experience. She supervises students at all academic levels and actively participates in research projects and scientific committees. Additionally, she is the deputy leader of the interdisciplinary NTNU research and education group SHAPE, a council member of the program council for the Project Management Program at NTNU, as well as an author and peer reviewer for several national and international publishers (conferences, journals, and books). Dr. Karlsen is, among other things, a member of the NEON network for organizational research in Norway, and the international ACM (Association for Computer Machinery) community.

Over the years, Dr. Karlsen has held several academic leadership roles, including vice-dean, head of department, deputy head of department, and research group leader. She has been a visiting researcher abroad and has empirical research experience in sectors such as healthcare, search and rescue, offshore, banking, food, and construction. Furthermore, she has served as the equality and diversity ombudsperson at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, chair of NOKOBIT (Norwegian Conference for Organizations' Use of IT), representative to the National Council for ICT, and member of the application and leadership group for the Centre for Excellence in IT Education (ExcITEd).

  • SHAPE - Collaboration Arena for Project Management and Change (2023-present)

  • The Norwegian Open AI Lab (NAIL) (2023-present)
    Associated NTNU researcher at The Norwegian Open Artificial Intelligence Lab - NAIL. The center is hosted by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and among others engages in a variety of research and innovation activities.
  • Green2050 (2022-present)
    Associated NTNU researcher and core team member at The Centre for Green Shift in the Built Environment - Green2050. The Centre for Green Shift in the Built Environment aims to be an arena of networking and collaboration between academia and the industry, i.e., a hub for accelerating existing, planned, and new projects. The goal is to transition into a carbon neutral, built environment within 2050. Green2050 will provide research of excellence and educate candidates with high digital- and sustainability competence ready to take on the green shift.

  • Arena for eHealth (2018 - 2024)
    Research member of the arena which was started in 2018 as a cross-departemental collaboration effort constituting members from various NTNU departments and external partners. Start-plugg project funding: 120 000 Nkr. See https://www.ntnu.no/3h/ehelse for further information.  Karlsen was in the initiatorteam for the arena and member of the management team until 2021. From 2021 ordinary research member involved in among others the research on person-centered robotics care in nursing homes.
  • The Sustainable Digital Transformation Research Group (2017 – present)
    Founder and member of The Sustainable Digital Transformation Research Group, being a core arena at NTNU for developing cutting-edge cross-disciplinary research related to the designing, implementation and validation of digitalization disruptive innovations aiming to address societal needs, since its inception in 2017. Leader of the SDT research group at the Department of ICT and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Information and Electrical Engineering, NTNU from August 1, 2021, to January 15, 2025. 
  • Member of the Strategic Research Area Group Digital Enterprise at the IE faculty focusing on generating knowledge on the changes, implications, and consequences of digital technology design and use in organizations, organization ecosystems, the economy, businesses, and the society at large. 
  • TEFT (2017-2021)
    Member of The TEFT Management Team (https://www.ntnu.no/teft), a joint IIF and IIR Research Lab at NTNU from 2017 until 31st July 2021. Lab start-up was sponsored by Sparebanken Møre with NOK 20 million. TEFT was described in the newspaper Sunnmørsposten 27th of Sept. -17.
  • ExcITEd Centre for Excellent IT Education (2016-2020)
    Member of the ExcITEd Centre for Excellent IT Education application and management team. ExcITEd was awarded «National Center of Excellence» by Nokut in 2016.  Financed by NOKUT with 37 000 000 NOK. Start date: 2016-12-01.   • The Process Innovation Lab, PIL (2014-2015)
    PIL, an interdisciplinary research group, was established by the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at AaUC with collaborators from academia, industry and hospitals. In relation to IT the main research areas have been Applied Modelling and Lean as techniques, principles and practices to support process change. The lab was the predecessor of the Sustainable Digital Transformation Research group established at the Dept. of ICT and Natural Scienes at NTNU in 2017. Karlsen initiated the lab and have both been Head and Vice-head of the Process Innovation Lab @ AaUC in the years 2014-2015.

  • 1The NOKOBIT conference has been organized annually for the last 30 years as a national conference in information science and information systems. It covers a broad range of topics related to development, implementation and use of ICT in organizations, including sustainability and societal issues of ICT. The conference is a joint arena for researchers and practitioners for extending the knowledge in the area. Karlsen has been member of the NOKOBIT board for five years, of which she was chairperson for two of the years, in 2017 and 2018.

A social VR-based collaborative exergame for rehabilitation: codesign, development and user study

In this journal article, findings on various key design principles to support healthcare professionals, researchers and industrial experts in developing ergonomic and sustainable VR-based exergames for senior citizens are presented.
