About

I am an associate professor at the Department of Historical and Classical Studies. From March 2023, I also serve as deputy head of research at the department.

My work focuses on political culture, political participation, and political language and communication in 19th Century Scandinavia and Europe.

My doctoral dissertation investigated the concept of democracy in mid-19th Century Denmark (Aarhus 2017). In recent years I have worked with the development of a peasant movement in Denmark from 1830 to 1870, particularly the contributions to political culture and communication by peasant farmer actors.

From 2024 to 2028 I am PI of the project "Petitions and Petitioning in the Nascent Democracy. Norway in the long 19th Century", funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project investigates petitioning culture in Norway from 1790 to 1910. The project emphasizes the petitioning of disenfranchised and marginalised groups.

I am involved in the Academy of Finland project on "Political Representation – Tensions between Parliament and the People from the Age of Revolutions to the 21st Century", headed by the Academy of Finland Professor, Pasi Ihalainen. I will be visiting professor at the University of Jyväskylä in 2021-2026 as a part of this project.

Before coming to Trondheim in 2019, I was a postdoctoral researcher at Leiden University (2018-2019) and Aarhus University (2018). I was a visiting fellow at Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology in 2013.

My teaching includes:

HIST1550/1550 Introduction to History after 1750

HIST2006 Cultural and Social History

HIST2007 Nationalism, imperialism, and democratization after 1750

HIST1505 Introduction to Theory and Method
