Energy supply security - Civil security
NTNU Civil security - Energy supply security
Energy Supply Security addresses the reliability and security of energy supply in terms of cyber threats and the new geopolitical situation.
Traditional reliability methods are not developed to handle the complex structure of distribution systems exposed to new threats and vulnerabilities. Our work will focus both on the modelling part of production and the distribution of energy, while also taking into account threats and vulnerabilities.
Particular topics addressed
- Surveillance programs for network of pipelines from the Norwegian continental shelf to the continent using autonomous vehicles with advance sensor technology.
- Reliability and security of isolated grids, e.g., in Longyearbyen at Svalbard.
- Can small modular reactors (SMRs) contribute to robust energy supply during crises like war, extreme weather conditions, cyber-attacks etc?
- Can Norway handle the safety challenge if nuclear becomes part of the Norwegian energy mix?
Background
The Russian invasion in Ukraine was an eyeopener where the Western Europe realized how vulnerable the energy supply can be. Norway responded to the following energy crisis by increasing gas production to compensate for reduced import of Russian gas to Europe. The Norwegian ambition to make sure that Norway can produce and distribute energy to Europe as well as within Norway with high reliability and security has been manifested.
