About Adaption

Our research group on Adaptation focuses on tackling the complex challenges of High-Intensity Low Probability (HILP) Low-Intensity High Probability (LIHP) events, like extreme weather, geopolitical conflicts, and other environmental crises. One key example of the growing threats we address is the rising number of floods across Europe, which highlights the increasing frequency of extreme weather events. Our work aims to create ways for cities, critical infrastructure, and communities to adapt to such challenges.

We bring together experts from fields like urban planning, architecture, design, geography, humanitarian studies, literature, and psychology to develop strategies that improve resilience against these crises, which are made worse by climate change, forced migration, and economic instability.

Our approach centers on understanding uncertainty, risk, and resilience, with a focus on social and spatial justice, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk reduction. By working across disciplines and using real-world cases, we offer practical insights into preparing infrastructure, communities, and cities for these rising threats.
