Christmas Materials
SFI CASA wishes you all a Merry Christmas! Materials matter. Our research is all about understanding how materials and structures react to impact and other extreme loadings.
Presentation video SFI CASA, SIMLab
At the Norwegian University of Science and Technology there is a lab that tortures materials and structures for one purpose only, to protect.

Shock tube testing of laminated glass
The SIMLab Shock tube consists of a long tube and a tank. The tube is 18.2 m long and is divided into six sections. The tube ends in a 5.1 m3 dump tank. The tube starts with a circular internal cross-section with a diameter of 0.34 m before it is transformed to a square cross-section of 0.3 m x 0.3 m. Threaded holes in the tube floor enable mounting of test specimens in the test section, and windows in the test section and the dump tank allow high-speed cameras to investigate the structural response during an experiment.
The high-pressure chamber, the driver section, generates a uniform shock wave propagating down the tube under controlled conditions by a rapid release of compressed gas. The facility is designed to release pressures as high as 170 bar resulting in an incident shock wave with a Mach number of 2.6. The compressed gas is released by a triple diaphragm system resulting in a controlled and instantaneous burst of the diaphragms, and aluminium inerts may be used to vary the volume of the compressed gas. Safer Solutions - Better Protection
SFI CASA´s research revolves around improving physical security. The video illustrates how our advanced computer models contribute to making society less vulnerable, so that when the unthinkable happens people and critical infrastructure are as well protected as possible.
Chrashworthy Christmas 2018
SFI CASA wish you all a Crashworthy Christmas!

Blast loading of concrete pipe
Blast loading of concrete pipe. The pipe is 1.56 meters long with inner diameter of 200 mm and a wall thickness of 41 mm. The charge is 7.5 grams of C-4. The experiment is recorded with a Phantom v2012 at 22629 fps.
Impact test on fillet weld
This is a video obtained with an high-speed camera. The test specimens are purpose-made to enable subjecting fillet welds to impact loading. See here for more details.
Simultation VS Experiment
Comparison between simulation and experiment of ductile tearing of blast-loaded steel plate.
Numerical simulation (left) and experiment (right) of ductile tearing of a blast-loaded steel plate. The blast loading is generated using the SIMLab Shock Tube Facility. The numerical simulation is performed by the finite element code EUROPLEXUS.
