Course content

The course addresses environmental problems such as global warming, the human health and ecological effects of toxic emissions, acidification and eutrophication. The course provides a introduction to methods for the assessment of environmental effects of technical systems and products: risk analysis, life-cycle assessment and external costs. The focus is on emissions from energy systems and technologies used in the energy sector. The course discusses the use, assumptions, strengths and limitations of these methods. Through these methods will the students be able to understand the relation between technology and environmental problems in order to identify option for more sustainable technical systems.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
The candidate shall have knowledge about
- important environmental effects of pollution caused by energy systems
- the greenhouse effect and climate change
- the toxicity of particulate matter
- the ecological effects of nitrogen oxides, metals and organic chemicals
- methods for the assessment of environmental impact

Competences
The candidate can
- describe the carbon cycle involving the atmosphere, the ocean and the biosphere
- execute a risk analysis to assess the distribution and effect of toxic emissions on human health and ecosystems
- set up and solve energy and pressure balance equations in the atmosphere
- set up and solve mass balance equations describing the fate of pollutants across different environmental media (air/water/soil) and different locations

General competence
After completing this course, the student should have competence about different types of environmental effects of energy systems, there overall importance, cause-consequence mechanisms and methods to model and evaluate consequences.

Learning methods and activities

The lectures focus on knowledge of different types of environmental probelms and of methods to assess environmental impacts. Exercises aim at enabling the student to set up simple models to describe different processes ocurring in nature. The models consist of sets of equations and are solved on paper or with the use of Excel or Matlab. The reading contributes to an understanding of the connections in the material and a more in-depth treatment. There is a requirement for a minimum number of problem sets to be handed. The course is thaught in English. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
