Research
Øyvind Brandtsegg is a composer and performer working in the fields of computer improvisation and sound installations. He has a deep interest in developing new instruments and audio processing methods for artistic purposes, and he has contributed novel extensions to both granular synthesis, feedback systems, and live convolution techniques. Brandtsegg has participated on more than 30 music albums in a variety of genres, and made several sound art installations for public spaces.
Brandtsegg's research at NTNU is based on the use of new technologies in music performance, where two opposing perspectives combine: To illuminate the affordances and limitations of technology through the sharp quality criteria set by music performance, and searching for new ways of performing music through the new possibilities offered by technology. Design and implementation of new music instruments requires foundational research on enabling technologies. He has developed new methods for granular synthesis, convolution, algorithmic processes and artificial intelligence, and human-to-computer interfaces.
In 2020 Brandtsegg led the work of organizing the conference "Live Interfaces" with the key topics “Artificial Intelligence – Artistic Intelligence – Automated Emotional Intelligence”
