Anniken Susanne Th. Karlsen

About

Dr. Anniken Karlsen is a researcher and educator in Computer & Information Sciences (CIS) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). She holds a PhD in Information Science from the University of Bergen (UiB), a Master’s in Information Technology from Aalborg University (AAU), and is a siviløkonom from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), and a computer engineer from the former Møre and Romsdal University College of Engineering (MRIH). In addition to a one-year practical-pedagogical education from NHH and UiB, she has completed NTNU's UniPed program for employees.

Dr. Karlsen’s interests and competencies in teaching and research encompass a broad range of topics related to the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation of complex information systems. She is head of the Sustainable Digital Transformation research group and serves as the deputy head of the Collaboration Arena for Project Management and Change. She is council member of the Academic Council for the Academic Program in Project Management at NTNU. Additionally, she contributes to the academic community as an author and reviewer for various renowned national and international conferences, journals, and books. Dr. Karlsen teaches and supervises bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD candidates, and actively participates in numerous research projects and scientific committees.

Throughout her career, Dr. Karlsen has been entrusted various academic leadership roles and functions, including Vice Dean, Deputy Head of Department, and Head of Department. She has been Ombudsperson for Equality and Diversity, chair of NOKOBIT (Norwegian Conference for Organizations’ Use of IT) and member of the Excited Centre for Excellence in IT Education application and management group. She has taught a wide range of courses, supervised numerous students, been a visiting researcher abroad, and has research experience across diverse industries and sectors, including healthcare, search and rescue, offshore, banking, food, and construction. In the years from 2012 to 2016, Dr. Karlsen worked in the field as an action researcher in a process monitoring and control system development project within the construction sector. This Eurostar project resulted, among other things, in a book on continuous change management, digitalization, and holistic business management published by Fagbokforlaget.

In addition to her academic roles, Dr. Karlsen has held several positions of responsibility within the Ålesund City Council.

Research

Research focus

Dr. Karlsen's primary research focus revolves around holistic thinking and the integration of diverse concepts and ideas from multiple domains to engineer advanced systems capable of intelligent interaction with humans and other entities. This commitment is evident in her exploration of sustainable digital transformation and application of best practice systems analysis and design techniques within both project-based and product-based software engineering. Within the realm of digital transformation, Dr. Karlsen's interests extend to enterprise modeling, change management, and project management, recognizing their crucial role in successfully navigating transitions. Furthermore, she is fascinated by the opportunities offered by cutting-edge technologies such as social robots, digital twins, augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) algorithms as building blocks for propelling innovation and enhancing the efficiency of processes and systems in our digital age.

Associated NTNU researcher at The Norwegian Open Artificial Intelligence Lab - NAIL. The center is hosted by the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and among others engages in a variety of research and innovation activities.
Green2050 (2022-present)
Associated NTNU researcher and core team member at The Centre for Green Shift in the Built Environment - Green2050. The Centre for Green Shift in the Built Environment aims to be an arena of networking and collaboration between academia and the industry, i.e., a hub for accelerating existing, planned, and new projects. The goal is to transition into a carbon neutral, built environment within 2050. Green2050 will provide research of excellence and educate candidates with high digital- and sustainability competence ready to take on the green shift.

Arena for eHealth (2018 - present)
Research member of the arena which was started in 2018 as a cross-departemental collaboration effort constituting members from various NTNU departments and external partners. From 2021 ordinary research member involved in among others the research on person-centered robotics care in nursing homes.
The Sustainable Digital Transformation Research Group (2017 – present)
Head of The Sustainable Digital Transformation Research Group at the Department of ICT and Natural Sciences, The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (IE), NTNU. Member of the research group, being a core arena at NTNU for developing cutting-edge cross-disciplinary research related to the designing, implementation and validation of digitalization disruptive innovations aiming to address societal needs, since its start-up in 2017. The Process Innovation Lab, PIL (2014-2015)
PIL, an interdisciplinary research group, was established by the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at AaUC with collaborators from academia, industry and hospitals. In relation to IT the main research areas have been Applied Modelling and Lean as techniques, principles and practices to support process change. The lab was the predecessor of the Sustainable Digital Transformation Research group established at the Dept. of ICT and Natural Scienes at NTNU in 2017. Karlsen initiated the lab and have both been Head and Vice-head of the Process Innovation Lab @ AaUC in the years 2014-2015.

¹The NOKOBIT conference has been organized annually for the last 30 years as a national conference in information science and information systems. Both as study program coordinator, vice dean, deputy head, department head, researcher and lecturer Karlsen has been actively involved in improving the educational quality at the departments at which she has worked. In 2016 she was member of the ExcITEd (Centre for Excellent IT Education) application, awarded «National Center of Excellence». The centre, aiming at putting Norway in the forefront of innovative IT education and to make IT an increasingly more attractive study choice for young people, was funded with 37000000 NOK by NOKUT.
